Rotterdam, 17 February 2006 – E.ON Benelux is to support the restoration of forests in Kibale National Park, western Uganda, via Stichting Face (foundation). Face is active with park authorities on reforestation of 10.000 hectares to improve the natural habitat of chimpanzees. E.ON Benelux views this as a good example of economic interests melding with durable development.
Kibale Forest is one of Eastern Africa’s most beautiful rainforests, spanning 56,000 hectares, at some 1,100 to 1,600 metres elevation. The lowest regions are home to papyrus swamps. Primal trees are everywhere – some topping fifty metres. The forest is known for its numerous ape species, including over thirteen types of primate. This is almost unrivalled in Africa.
The natural habitat of the chimpanzees in particular is threatened by deforestation. Stichting Face and the park authorities are working together on reforestation. The years 2005 and 2006 will see the restoration of 10,000 hectares of forest. Stichting Face will be working closely with the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA). Maintenance will be carried out by local management and people from nearby villages.
With this project, E.ON Benelux takes on a solution which is good for flora and fauna, ensures sustainable support for the local economy and population – while reducing CO2 emissions. Support comprises a financial contribution of € 125,000, management related back-up by Face, plus the development of small-scale projects, and a focus on the overall issue of deforestation in Africa. E.ON Benelux will pass on the CO2 revenues to its customers. Meanwhile, during the next several months, staff can proactively contribute to the project from their home locations. Concrete proposals will be developed for this.
The primary goal of Stichting Face is help reduce greenhouse effects by forestation and forest conservation. Face was founded in 1990 by the former Samenwerkende elektriciteitsproductiebedrijven (N.V Sep), and since 2000 has been an independent, non-profit foundation. Face cooperates with associates with a genuine stake in forests, who are in a position to preserve forests on a durable basis. The forests meet FSC standards for good forest management and preservation of the original forest. Stichting Face certifies the forests in terms of CO2 recorded under the guidelines of the Kyoto protocol. The inspection is performed by the independent Societé Generale de Surveillance.
