Rotterdam, 28 August 2006 – E.ON Benelux will support a new cultural competition for junior schools in Capelle aan den IJssel during the school year 2006-2007. The competition is one of the activities of the Cultuurwijzer organisation which brings primary school children into contact with local art and cultural bodies. For E.ON Benelux, which is based in Rotterdam at the border of the Capelle municipality, this is an opportunity to demonstrate its social commitment. Today, both parties confirmed their collaboration by signing an agreement.

Every year Cultuurwijzer offers children from primary schools an overview of the culture/art offering in Capelle. This enables a link between schools and cultural institutions – and connects with the child’s perception of the world. The approach has proven successful and 24 of Capelle’s 27 primary schools now interface with Cultuurwijzer activities. This adds up to some 6000 school children. The Cultuurwijzer is backed by the Capelle aan den IJssel municipal council.

The cultural competition scheduled for 2006-2007 is designed to encourage children in the 6-12 age group to actively work with the experiences they encountered through the Cultuurwijzer. The competition is in three stages. In autumn 2006 the participating schools host a performance that introduces the children to as many art forms as possible. In spring 2007 seven locations in Capelle will present projects from the schools. Expert juries will select entries from each school, which will compete for the prize at the final show in June 2007, at the local Isala theatre. During this show the top projects will be re-assessed and an all-round winning performance will be selected.

The head office of E.ON Benelux is located on the site of the RoCa power station. RoCa’s design is highly innovative. The power station produces electricity for the public grid and heat for the district heating network. RoCa also provides central heating and CO2 for the intensive market gardening industry under glass, to the north of Rotterdam.

By sponsoring Cultuurwijzer E.ON Benelux evidences a social and cultural commitment with its immediate surroundings. The sponsorship agreement is worth € 50,000. Apart from that, E.ON employees will be involved with the execution of the project en selecting the participating entries. Social commitment is a core value at E.ON.
